03/27/2025 Training Log – We Are Not Amused (The Wind Is a Pain in the Glutes)

Today’s Plan

Warm Up. 10-20 Minutes:
– Easy jogging in Zone 2 (target 8:04–8:33/km)
– 5 minutes of running drills
– Include 5×15 seconds strides at (target 7–8 RPE)

Main Set. Repeat 3 times:
– 3 miles (4.8 Kilometres) at tempo effort, top of Zone 3 (target 6:48–6:58/km)
– 1.5 minutes walking/jogging recovery

Cool Down. 10–20 Minutes:
– Easy jogging (target 8:04–8:33/km)

Fueling:
– Pre-Workout: Maurten Drink Mix 160, 40 mins prior (~40g carbs)
– In-Workout: Maurten Gel 160 after the first 3-miler, half a Solid during second 3-miler
– Hydration: Ongoing, but rushed between sets due to short recovery window

Execution & Reflections:

This one was rough, no way around it.

The wind—22.6 km/h SSW—was relentless, and somehow always against me. There was no tailwind reprieve, just like during Tuesday’s session. I started out strong—maybe too strong. My pacing in the first 3-mile block was closer to 6:25–6:35/km when I probably should have stuck to 6:54/km as prescribed. The second block exposed that mistake. I bonked mid-way, needing to cut one interval short. The third? I got two Kms in before throwing in the towel.

I did everything “right” on paper—fueling with Drink Mix 160, then a Gel, then part of a Solid—but I still hit the wall. Was it the short 1:30 recovery between efforts? Was I under-recovered from Tuesday’s intervals? Should I be spacing hard workouts more at my age? Maybe Tuesday + Friday is a better rhythm than Tuesday + Thursday?

Also, when I began slipping, I ditched pace and locked into cadence using my Drum Buddy—175 BPM. It helped, mentally at least.

Also: my HRM-Dual chest strap chafed me for the first time. Ladies, I feel your pain.

But here’s the thing—I’m not mad. I felt defeated right after the run, but I’ve already bounced back. This was one of those “teacher” workouts. And sometimes the lesson is: you’re human, and you’re learning.

Not every workout will be pretty. But every one counts.
