Welcome to Running in 2021

Week of December 28

This is the last week of 2020 and I am pleased to say that I was consistent in my running and in the latter stages of the year I embraced a new running mindset.  I enjoy running, therefore the language I use to describe each workout should reflect that love of running.

My goal this week was for 36.5 km – my actual distance was 37.78 km.

I did not have my first run until Thursday of the week, so I ended up having a mini run streak to get my distance in.

Day 1 of 4  Distance:  7:90 km  Avg pace:  6:20/km

Day 2 of 4  Distance:  8.56 km  Avg pace:  6:49/km

Day 3 of 4  Distance:  8.70 km  Avg pace:  7:05/km

Day 4 of 4  Distance:  12.62 km  Avg pace:  7:00/km

Christmas Running in the Snow.

Week of December 21

This week was my cutback week at roughly 28 km. I currently run 4 times per week, however, this week I made some adjustments and ran the Kms over 3 days. The weather at this time is unpredictable. The trails and roadways were dry at the start of the week, then we saw rain and then we woke to snow-laden routes on Christmas Day.

Day 1/3 Distance: 6.02 km Avg pace: 6:01/km

Day 2/3 Distance: 10.02 km Avg pace: 6:57/km

Today was my first run ‘Snow Day’. Although it was a mild -1 °C, I chose to try my new Sealskinz Socks. My toes always suffer in cold weather and I vowed that would not be the case this winter. It was mild, but the socks kept my feet dry and warm on today’s trail run.

Day 3/3 Distance: 12.26 km Avg pace: 7:13/km

I enjoyed yesterday’s trail run so much that I decided to run it again today. Snow on trails and fields are a lot more appealing that the slush on the roadways.

Running Goals: Are You Interested or Committed?

This has been a good week of again running consistently to plan, after having missed roughly three weeks, initially due to a lower back issue, then subsequently ‘buried’ by work commitments. In retrospect, I probably could have gotten out for some runs once my back felt better.

Day 1/4 Distance: 6.03 km Avg pace: 5:53/km

Interested or Committed?

I recently listened to a Marathon Training Academy podcast featuring mindset expert, John Assaraf. The co-hosts and guest discussed the difference between being ‘interested’ in or ‘committed’ to achieving a goal or goals. This mindset message was timely for me as I pursue my long-term running goals.

I planned on running at my slower pace as I eased back into training, but I couldn’t seem to rein myself in.

Day 2/4 Distance: 6.02 km Avg pace: 5:49/km

This was supposed to be another ‘easy’ day! I felt great, nonetheless.

Day 3/4 Distance: 9.38 km [planned: 8.00 km] Avg pace: 6:48/km

Though I planned on 8 km, it’s so easy to get swept up in the excitement of running with a group.

Day 4/4 Distance: 12.13 km [planned: 10 km] Avg pace: 7:24/km

Garmin running stats
Finally an Easy Day!

I probably could have slowed my pace down further, but all-in-all, an enjoyable run under overcast skies and a brisk wind at times.

Beautiful Day for a Run!

strava stats

Strava gently nudged me with an email that showed me how inactive I had been during the month of November. The nerve!

It worked. I got out for a nice 8.47 km run under sunny skies and -3 °C temps. I had great company also!

It felt great to get the body moving again.
